How to Install DayZ Server Mods
Workshop mods on a DayZ dedicated server: @ folders, the -mod line, keys, and what CFTools Architect updates for you.
A DayZ mod on a dedicated server is a folder whose name starts with @, a key so clients can verify it, and a place in the -mod= startup list. The Workshop page your players subscribe to is not, by itself, the server install. Someone or something has to put the files where the dedicated server (app 223350, or 1042420 on experimental) will load them. Both branches use the DayZ Workshop, app 221100, for mods. The server branch and the Workshop app are different ids on purpose.
Order matters when mods depend on each other. A framework mod that loads after the mod that needs it is a crash that looks like a bad mission. Keep the -mod= list in the same order you tested. Do not sort it alphabetically to be neat. Keys belong where the server expects signatures if you verify them. A missing key is the "I can join but my friend cannot" ticket. The modded server list shows communities that published their mod stack in public. Open one and compare it to a server page here: DayZ Manager prints Workshop file ids when the crawler saw them.
CFTools Architect installs those Workshop mods and treats @ folders as mods. That is the product difference versus a VPS where you are the copy step. Updates are the part that hurts. A Workshop push at 2 a.m. leaves the server on yesterday's build and the clients on today's, and the kick message is not kind. Architect's job is to keep that copy current. CFTools Cloud is still worth having, but it does not replace the file sync. Cloud is RCon and live management. A mod update is a file event followed by a restart. The mod update workflow is the operator version of this paragraph.
Map mods are not optional cosmetics. If the mission is Namalsk and the mod is missing, you are not "sort of on Namalsk." The Namalsk guide and the Deer Isle guide exist because the token on the list and the mod on the disk have to be the same object. Chernarus does not need a map mod. Chernarus servers that still list forty mods are a different hobby. Say which hobby you are in the hostname.
Do not hot-edit a mod folder while the process is up and expect persistence to survive. Restart on purpose, at the time you published. Players forgive a posted restart. They do not forgive a silent one during a firefight. If you verify signatures, test with a clean client that is not your admin account, because your admin account has already cached the one file that is wrong.
Keep a written mod list with Workshop ids next to serverDZ.cfg. When a player says "the list is wrong," you can point at the server page instead of arguing. The index reads what the server reported. If the report is stale, restart and let the CFTools crawler pass. There is no edit button on DayZ Manager. Hosting the files correctly is the edit button.
Folders, order, and a clean client
Every mod is an @ folder and a place in -mod=. The folder name and the parameter must match. A Workshop download sitting in a content directory the server never references is not installed. It is a large file. Load order is the order in the parameter. When two mods fight, order is the first thing you change, one swap at a time, not five. Restart between swaps or you will not know which order the process actually used.
Keys and the server mod side, where a mod requires them, have to be present or clients fail in ways that look like a corrupted download. Read the mod's own install note. The note is the contract. A video that says "drop it in the folder" is not. After you add an id, join from a client that did not already have the files. Your staff machine is a bad test. A laptop with a fresh launcher subscription is a good one. If that client can enter, the modded page will eventually list the same ids the client was asked for.
Maps are mods. Adding Namalsk or Deer Isle is not a checkbox next to Chernarus. It replaces the mission. Tell people, and do not leave the old token in the hostname. The map index will follow the mission the server reports. If you wanted to stay official-terrain, stop at the Workshop items that do not replace the world, and check the Chernarus list to see the company you are in.
CFTools Architect installing the folders does not choose a sane list. Ten trader mods and a map you have not played is how you become unmaintainable. Add one, run a day, look at the player chart on the community roster. If the population survived the download, add another on purpose. CFTools Cloud announces the restart those adds require. Automatic updates into a live peak are not a shortcut. They are an unscheduled wipe of the session. Pin the workflow to a hour you can watch, and keep the previous @ folder until that watch succeeds.
