DayZ Launcher or Direct Connect

The official launcher finds mods and official servers. Direct connect is how you use an IP you already trust.

The DayZ launcher is the client Bohemia ships for finding servers, installing Workshop mods, and starting the game with the right parameters. Direct connect is you already knowing ip:port. You want the launcher when you do not know the server, and when the server is modded. You want direct connect when you have a server page open on DayZ Manager and you are tired of scrolling a browser that sorted itself differently from the way you think.

Mods are the deciding case. The launcher subscribes to the Workshop ids the server asks for and then starts DayZ. Direct connect into a modded server without those mods installed fails, sometimes with a clear message and sometimes with a kick that looks like a bad password. If the server page lists mods, let the launcher do the first join. After the mods are on disk, the Steam connect link on the page is a fair shortcut. Vanilla servers on /vanilla are the case where direct connect is enough on the first try.

The in-game browser and the launcher browser are not this website. They show what those clients queried. DayZ Manager shows what the CFTools Gameserver Data Service crawled, with spoofed counts removed. A server can be late to appear in one and present in the other. If you have the IP from the server page and the browser will not list it, direct connect anyway. Listing is politeness. The port is the join.

Official servers are the launcher's home turf. Community servers with a password are the direct-connect and Discord-password turf. The official and community page separates the products. Neither client removes a password. The open roster is how you avoid the prompt entirely.

Do not paste random connect strings from a video description that is a year old. Open the server page, confirm the chart is alive, then connect. Dead IPs get reused by other people's games more often than players expect. The id in our URL is tied to the CFTools record. If that page 404s, the server is gone. If it redirects, the name changed and the address on the new page is the one to use.

Administrators sometimes ask which browser "CFTools uses." The index is a crawler of public servers, not a launcher. CFTools Cloud does not join the game for you. It manages the server you already host. CFTools Architect hosts the dedicated server the launcher will eventually list. If your server is missing from the launcher, check that the query port is open, using the port guide. If it is missing from this site, it may be offline, unranked, or filtered as spoofed. Those are different problems and they have different fixes.

Keep the launcher installed even if you prefer direct connect. The day a mod updates, the launcher is the repair tool. Direct connect will not download the new file for you.

Use each one for the job it is good at

The launcher is the mod installer and the official browser. Direct connect is a precise instrument for an address you copied from a server page. For a modded server, launcher first, so the Workshop ids land. For a vanilla server, direct connect is enough immediately. After the mods exist on disk, the Steam link on the page is the faster return path. You do not have to pick a lifestyle.

When the launcher browser and this index disagree, prefer the page you just opened if its chart shows life. Browsers cache, filter, and delay. The crawler behind DayZ Manager also delays, and it drops spoofed counts. Neither is the game connection. The IP is the connection. If the IP from the page fails and the launcher IP succeeds, you found a stale page or a stale browser. Refresh once. If they still disagree, trust the client that actually put you in the mission, then look at the hostname inside the game and see which row it was.

Official servers are easier in the launcher because that is the population it was built to show. Community passwords are easier as direct connect plus a Discord word. The open list skips the word. The experimental list still needs the branch opt-in no matter which client you type the IP into. Direct connect will not opt you in. It will just fail.

If you run a server and friends say the launcher cannot see you, check the query port before you rebuild SteamCMD. The port guide is the checklist. If they can direct connect and the community page also sees you, the launcher is the thing that is late, and you can say so without panic. CFTools Cloud does not list you in the launcher. The query port does. Keep the launcher installed for the day a mod updates and every direct-connect user is suddenly missing a file. That day is why the launcher remains the repair tool even in a direct-connect group.

Questions

Which should I use for a modded server?

The launcher for the first join, so Workshop mods install. Direct connect is fine after that.

The launcher list and this site disagree. Which IP is right?

Use the address on the DayZ Manager server page you just opened, if the chart shows players.

Does CFTools replace the DayZ launcher?

No. The launcher is the game client. CFTools Cloud manages servers. This site only lists them.
